African Renaissance Productions process around making films, and the impact and sustainability of these films, is characterised and enhanced by the following elements:
Local voices and ownership:
Films are made in a way that allow issues to be communicated as experienced by local people to allow an understanding of what ‘poverty’ and ‘sustainable development’ really mean at a practical level. Where films deal with community issues, local people are involved at all stages, from seeking permission to make the film,in the research and development of the concept, throughout the shoot and during the edit.
Light footprint:
African Renaissance Productions aims to ensure a ‘light footprint’ when making films, both environmentally and socially. In addition, equipment and crew is kept to a minimum to facilitate a more intimate and interactive process.
Developing skills:
Where possible, emerging filmmakers are partnered with experienced directors during the shoot. In addition, local people are employed during the film-making, as researchers and facilitators, building capacity and creating employment.
Community screenings :
Once complete, the film is screened to the community to generate discussion and raise awareness around issues. Copies of the films as well as interview transcripts are handed over for the community to use.
Influence policy:
The films are used as an instrument for promoting discussion and debate about key issues relating to the integration of conservation, development and sustainability. Some films have been linked to and screened at international policy events .

Not only have partnerships with acclaimed filmmakers and directors enabled African Renaissance Productions to produce world-class films, but this has helped to ensure that the films are broadcast through local and international broadcasters, as well as film festivals.
Distribution:
While broadcast on mainstream broadcasters is an important element of African Renaissance Productions distribution strategy, the impact and sustainability of the films is enhanced by ensuring the films are also broadcast in policy-making fora, as well as to community groups as well as online and social media sites.
